There's a stretch in the middle of August when half the house ends up in boxes — one kid packing for a dorm, another who's outgrown the bed he's had since third grade, another leaving soon for the next chapter.

You can tell by the hallway. Laundry baskets doing duty as suitcases, a lamp with nowhere to go yet, somebody's shoes in everybody's way, and a roll of packing tape that keeps disappearing.

We've been helping families through this since 2005 — folks down the road, and folks clear across the country. Here's how it usually goes.

The Three Beds That Move in August

The one heading to school. Dorm beds are almost always Twin XL — 38 by 80 inches, five inches longer than a standard twin, which matters a great deal if you're six foot two. Campus rules vary on what you're allowed to bring, so it's worth two minutes on the housing page before you buy anything. A first apartment is a different story: usually a Full or Queen, and often the first real mattress somebody's ever picked out for themselves. That one's worth getting right.

The one somebody's outgrown. Kids grow faster than furniture. The twin that was plenty of bed at nine is a foot too short at fifteen, and the mattress that came with it has already put a kid through grade school. Most beds have a good working life of seven to ten years — and a growing teenager will run through one well before that. If feet are hanging off the end, that's the whole answer right there.

The one in the guest room. It earns its keep this time of year: kids home for a few days, grandparents in for the weekend, a roommate crashing the night before move-in. If that's where the old mattresses go to retire, this is a good month to take a second look — ideally before somebody sleeps on it and is far too polite to say anything.

Why Right Now Is a Good Time

Two things land at once in August.

The first is that the furniture's already moving. There's a dolly in the garage, a door propped open, and somebody who has already agreed to help carry things up the stairs. Swapping a mattress is never easier than during the one week the whole house is in motion anyway.

The second is pricing. Labor Day is the biggest mattress event of the year across the whole industry, and ours is running now through September 15:
